TRUCK OF THE FUTURE IS A MERCEDES-BENZ – VIDEO THE TRUCK OF THE FUTURE IS A MERCEDES-BENZ THAT DRIVES ITSELF Daimler Trucks presents the truck of the future — the self-driving Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025. “The truck of the future is a Mercedes-Benz that drives itself.” Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, the member of Daimler’s Board of Management responsible for Daimler Trucks and Buses, came straight to the point in his description of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025, which had its world premiere. The truck is equipped with the extremely intelligent Highway Pilot assistance system, which enables it to drive completely autonomously at speeds of up to 85 km/h. Daimler Trucks demonstrated the vehicle on a trip along a section of the A14 autobahn near the city of Magdeburg, in which the Future Truck drove itself in completely realistic driving situations.

Luxury has also been tagged with the name of the brand due to its high-end vehicles and components. On the other hand, the Mercedes-AMG brings the already-awesome products of the three-pointed star brand to another level. This is the reason why it is really hard to separate these two divisions of Daimler. Products and services associated with Mercedes-Benz are no stranger to special recognition or awards too because of the above-mentioned facts. Recently, Mercedes-AMG was given two trophies at the Engine Expo in Stuttgart. The prizes were handed over to the performance division of Daimler for winning the Engine of the Year Awards for 2014. The product recognized in the event was the Mercedes-AMG 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine. The engine was awarded as the “New Engine 2014″ and “1.8-liter to 2.0-liter”. The product of Mercedes-AMG is currently considered to be the most powerful four-cylinder in the world that is why it was given the two awards. Notably, there were 36 and 42 participant who were listed from Europe, US and Asia, respectively. The subject in the awards was the M133 design of Mercedes-AMG. The M133 is a four-cylinder petrol engine with turbocharging. It is based on the M270 engine of Mercedes-Benz. However, the performance and strength of the engine were cranked up to a higher level to achieve an output of up to 260 kW and 450 Nm of torque.

To this end it constantly monitors the topography ahead of the vehicle. This not only works when route guidance by the navigation system is active, but also when this system is currently not in use. In developing new hybrid models Mercedes-Benz has benefited immensely from cooperating with its Formula 1 racing team, which also makes use of high-tech hybrid engines to achieve fuel savings. This can result in synergistic effects both for series production vehicles as well as racing cars. Many hybrid vehicles waste energy when driving downhill. Because frequently their high-voltage battery has too high a charge at the wrong time to be able to additionally store the incidental free recuperation energy associated with driving downhill. The “Intelligent HYBRID” operating strategy, which Mercedes-Benz has employed in the S-Class since summer 2013 and now also uses in the new C-Class, ensures that the high-voltage battery is always only charged sufficiently enough to take advantage of all opportunities for recuperation provided by the route and the terrain. In practice this means: if the battery is too full, the electric motor automatically boosts the combustion engine to discharge the battery enough to be able to fully store the expected recuperation energy. At the same time, thanks to the boost from the electric motor the vehicle uses less fuel and thus produces fewer emissions during this phase. The system uses data from the COMAND Online navigation system to calculate the recuperation potential of the road ahead. For example, the data provides forward-looking information about the route profile and speed limits in a one-metre grid for up to seven kilometres in advance. This information is processed by the Central Powertrain Controller (CPC), which then initiates the anticipatory measures. It not only lowers the battery charge in line with the situation before a downhill stretch by expanding the all-electric or boost periods, but also controls the potentially necessary recharging of the battery by the combustion engine with foresight in order to benefit from the most favourable battery state of charge. Further adaptive control algorithms additionally take the current vehicle weight, the driving behaviour (including vehicle speed and braking behaviour) and the load of the ancillary consumers into account for predicting the recuperation potential. “Intelligent HYBRID” not only works as the only anticipatory operating strategy when a destination has been programmed into the navigation system, but also functions when route guidance is inactive. In this case the system calculates the probability of the driver making a turn dependent on the category of the road. For example, if the hybrid vehicle is travelling on a motorway, it assumes that the vehicle will probably continue on the motorway for the next seven kilometres. “Intelligent HYBRID” keeps the driver informed about an upcoming elevated recuperation potential by highlighting the road ahead of the vehicle in green on the energy flow display. How much fuel is being saved depends on the topography. This has been demonstrated by experience from many thousands of test kilometres. The more mountains there are, the higher the fuel savings will be. That is why the effect will be more noticeable in the mountains than on plains. Currently Mercedes-Benz is becoming a talking point in the world of Formula 1 by deploying racing cars featuring hybrid technology. After Nico Rosberg triumphed at the opening race in Australia, there have been two one-two victories in Malaysia and Bahrain. In each case Lewis Hamilton finished ahead of Nico Rosberg. The next race takes place on 20 April in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai.

Mercedes Will Equip Future Compact Hybrids With Three-Cylinder Engines Bernhard Heil, the head of powertrain development of Daimler, revealed that Mercedes-Benz will be using three-cylinder engines in its future compact hybrid cars designed for front-wheel drive. According to Automotive News, some Mercedes engineers are skeptical about the idea of putting three-cylinder engines. However, Daimler pointed out that smaller engines carry a lot of potentials. Heil said that it is needed for transverse-mounted hybrid powertrains. It will also address the limitations posed by four-cylinder engines in terms of packaging at the front end of a compact hybrid car. The Daimler official noted that Mercedes will still use four-cylinder engines it its rear-wheel drive vehicles, including their hybrid versions. He reasoned out that these cars have more space for bigger engines, thus, equipping them with four-cylinder engines is not an issue. Heil revealed the plan of Daimler to develop small gasoline-based engines too. He said that this will be made in partnership with Renault. This will be in addition to the enhanced 1.5-liter turbodiesel engines already offered by Renault for Mercedes cars in Europe. The powertrain head of the parent company of Mercedes stated that three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines co-developed with Renault are for the compact variants of the GLA, CLA, A and B classes. When asked when will the new compact engines make their way in the market, Heil answered that it might be two years from now. The report noted as well that the new engines will unlikely make their way to the US market. This is because models that are shipped in the US usually carry powerful engines.

Mercedes-Benz Dropping the Twin-Turbo V8 5.5 Liter Reports have surfaced that Mercedes-Benz will drop the twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter after the current-generation S63 AMGA few days ago, we told you about the demise of the SLS in order to make way for its successor codenamed C190. In case you missed it, according to our good friends in Germany, Mercedes-Benz will stop production of all SLS models in the first half of 2014.Today, reports have surfaced that Mercedes-Benz will drop the twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter after the current-generation S63 AMG. Not nearly as dramatic an announcement as the dropping of an entire model line but we still had to ask why. For those unfamiliar, inside the 2014 S 63 AMG is the M157 is a Euro 6-compliant twin-turbo V8 5.5-liter gasoline engine that is capable of producing 585 bhp (436 kW) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft). AMG chief Tobias Moers revealed that the mill cannot receive a power hike without a negative impact on its reliability. He did not offer up any information on whether or not other S-Class models would receive this engine as well but it is more than likely that the recently revealed S-Class coupe and the convertible will also receive it.

New Illuminated Three-Pointed Star Offered By Mercedes-Benz The three pointed star is a familiar sight in all Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and it will receive an enhancement that will delight lighting enthusiasts around the world. The luxury vehicle manufacturer recently revealed the illuminated Three-Pointed Star for the front grille. The dealer-installed option will be available in a number of Mercedes-Benz vehicles including the 2006+ CLS-Class, 2012+ M-Class, 2013+ GL-Class and the 2014 E-Class. The enhanced emblem will also be available for other models of the company. However, there were no announcements if the illuminated Three-Pointed Star will be installed in future Mercedes-Benz models as they emerge from the factory. The enhanced emblem appears classy since it uses a LED and light tube technology that gives the vehicle an elegant appearance. It also illuminates whenever the car is unlocked using the key fob.
